Arban and The Carnival of Venice
The Carnival of Venice is a fantasia with a theme and four variations by the French cornetist Jean-Baptiste Arban (1825-1889), included in his method. The theme is a Neapolitan folk song, “O mamma, mamma cara”.
It is famous for the speed of its variations, which call for solid double and triple tonguing. It is mostly worked on in the last years of conservatory and is a regular showpiece in concerts.
If it is your first time with it, practice it in MIDI & MusicXML Player with the tempo turned well down, and bring it up little by little: some variations are extremely fast.
