About the piece

Haydn and his trumpet concerto

Joseph Haydn wrote the Trumpet Concerto in E-flat major (Hob. VIIe:1) in 1796 for Anton Weidinger, a trumpeter at the Vienna court and a champion of the keyed trumpet. It was first performed in Vienna on 28 March 1800.

It has three movements (Allegro, Andante and Allegro) and is one of the most played works in the trumpet repertoire, common in auditions and conservatory exams.

The player currently includes the third movement, with piano accompaniment. Practice it with the tempo turned down, and bring it up little by little.

Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto is in the public domain: Joseph Haydn died in 1809.
