In this entry of the MuseTube course, we will dive into managing parts in MuseScore, also known as particellas. We will learn how to create, manage, and customize parts within an orchestral score to improve organization and presentation.

🎼 What Are Parts in MuseScore?

Parts, or particellas, are individual versions of a full orchestral score that each musician receives. While the conductor works with a full score containing all instruments, each musician gets only the part that corresponds to them.

🖥️ Accessing the Parts Management

To manage parts in MuseScore, click on the “Parts” button in the top toolbar. This will open a window listing all the instruments in the score.

  • The “Open all” option generates a separate tab for each instrument.
  • You can also select specific instruments by holding Control (Cmd on Mac) and clicking on the desired ones.
  • To select a range of instruments, use Shift + click.

🎺 Creating Custom Parts

MuseScore allows you to create custom parts that group multiple instruments together. To do this:

  • Click on “Parts” and select “Create new part”.
  • Rename the part (e.g., “Strings”).
  • In the “Instruments” tab, activate the “eye” icon for the instruments you want to include.

🎵 Using Voices in Parts

If a score contains multiple voices in a single staff, you can filter which voices appear in a part:

  • In the “Instruments” panel, click on the gear icon next to the staff.
  • Select or deselect voices to display only the ones needed.

Additionally, from this same menu, you can enable the “Small staff” option, which is useful for solo passages or highlighting specific sections.

📑 Formatting Parts

To modify the style of a part without affecting the full score, go to “Format” > “Page Settings”. From here, you can:

  • Adjust margins.
  • Change page orientation (portrait or landscape).
  • Apply changes to all parts using the “Apply to all parts” button.

📤 Exporting Parts in MuseScore

To export the full score or individual parts as PDFs:

  • Go to “File” > “Export” and select PDF.
  • Choose whether to export only the full score or specific parts.
  • Decide if each part should be exported as a separate file or combined into a single document.

The order in which you select the parts determines their order in the final PDF.

🎯 Conclusion

Managing parts in MuseScore is a powerful tool that helps organize music efficiently for ensembles and orchestras. From creating individual parts to customizing formatting and exporting, this system makes life easier for musicians and conductors.
