In this lesson of our MuseTube course, we will learn how to edit notes in MuseScore, modify their duration, change their pitch, and delete measures correctly. This is a continuation of video #9, where we covered the basics of note input.

🎵 Modifying the Duration of a Note

If you’ve entered a note with the wrong duration, MuseScore allows you to modify it in several ways:

  • Select the note and use the keyboard shortcuts “Shift + W” to increase its duration or “Shift + Q” to decrease it.
  • You can also use the numeric keypad outside of note input mode:
    • Press 6 for a “half note”
    • Press 5 for a “quarter note”
    • Press 4 for an “eighth note”

🎼 Changing the Pitch of a Note

If you want to modify the pitch of an already written note, MuseScore provides several options:

  • Move up or down by semitones: Use the Up Arrow and Down Arrow keys. This will add sharps or flats as needed.
  • Move up or down by diatonic steps: Use Alt + Shift + Up Arrow or Alt + Shift + Down Arrow. This moves the note within the scale without adding accidentals.
  • Move up or down by octaves: Use Ctrl + Up Arrow to go up an octave and Ctrl + Down Arrow to go down an octave.

🗑️ Deleting Notes and Measures

When deleting a note in MuseScore using the Delete key, it automatically turns into a rest. However, there are different ways to manage this:

  • Delete a single note: Select it and press Delete. It will be replaced by a rest.
  • Delete an entire measure: Select the measure and press Ctrl + Delete. This will remove all notes and rests, completely deleting the measure.

🎯 Conclusion

In this lesson, we have learned how to modify a note’s duration, change its pitch by semitones or diatonic steps, move it by octaves, and delete notes or measures in MuseScore. Mastering these keyboard shortcuts will help you streamline your workflow and improve your efficiency when editing sheet music.
