Topic #12 Add and remove measures in MuseScore
In this article, you will learn the different ways MuseScore offers to create and delete measures. From here, you can choose the method that best suits your workflow.
🎼 Creating Measures in MuseScore
When creating a new score and clicking “Next,” you have the option to choose the number of measures. If you already know how many measures your piece will have, you can specify it here. Additionally, you can create an anacrusis measure (a partial measure that does not start on the strong beat, often used as an introduction to a piece or when changing passages).
➕ Inserting Measures
MuseScore allows you to insert measures in different ways:
- Right-click method: Right-click on a measure, go to “Insert Measure,” and choose whether to insert measures before, after, at the beginning, or at the end of the score.
- Properties Panel: Click on a measure, go to the properties panel, and use the “Insert Measures” button to add new measures at the desired position.
- Toolbar Button: Use the “+” button in the toolbar to insert a measure before or after the selected one.
- Menu Option: Go to “Add Measures” and choose where to insert them.
- Keyboard Shortcuts: Press
Insert
to add a measure before the selected one. To add multiple measures, useCtrl + Insert
and specify the number. - End of Score Shortcut: Use
Alt + Shift + B
to add multiple measures at the end.
🗑️ Deleting Measures in MuseScore
Deleting measures is slightly different from deleting their contents. Pressing Delete
will clear the notes inside a measure but will not remove the measure itself. To remove a measure completely, use Ctrl + Delete
.
🚮 Different Ways to Delete Measures
- Keyboard Shortcut: Select a measure and press
Ctrl + Delete
. - Right-click Method: Right-click on a measure and select “Delete Measures.”
- Menu Option: Go to “Tools” → “Delete Selected Range.”
- Removing Empty Measures: If you have unused measures at the end, use “Tools” → “Remove Empty Measures from End.”
